Vinny was a member of the Salthill Devon u21 side that won the u21 League in the 2006 season. He was also part of the Ireland squad that took part in the Four Nations Tournament in Scotland in 2007 and in March of '07 he had trials with Ipswich Town.
Vinny played with Salthill Devon for three years before signing for Galway United in July 2007. In two and a half years with the Tribesmen he made over seventy league appearances and scored eleven league goals.
In January 2010 Vinny moved to St Patrick's Athletic making 33 league appearances under boss Pete Mahon and scoring a total of ten goals. Vinny left the club at the end of the 2010 season to travel in Australia, returning to the club in August 2012. He resumed his Pats career with a substitute appearance against Cork City on 13 August and netted his first goal in a 3-0 win over Derry City on 3 September. By the end of the 2012 season he had scored 5 times in 11 league appearances. he also came on at half time in Pats' FAI Cup final defeat to Derry at the Aviva Stadium.
Vinny's next port of call was Dundalk where he signed for manager Stephen Kenny on 15 February 2013. He made his debut for the Lilywhites against Shamrock Rovers on the opening night of the 2013 season and scored once in 22 league appearances as the club finished second to champions St Patrick's Ath. Vinny left Dundalk at the end of 2013 and in January 2014 he signed for Tommy Dunne at newly formed Galway FC.
Back on the west coast, Vinny went on to score eight goals in 24 league appearances for Galway as they earned promotion to the Premier Division after winning the play-offs but the following year he was on the move, signing for Martin Russell at Limerick FC just days before the start of the 2015 season.
Vinny went on to score twelve goals in 28 league appearances for Limerick, which saw them secure the relegation play-off spot on the last day of the season. His performances were noticed and he received the Player of the Month award for August. However, Limerick were relegated to the First Division after being defeated by Finn Harps in the play-off final and in December 2015 Vinny returned for a third spell at Galway United.
Vinny's first appearance back in a Galway shirt saw him score in a 3-1 win over former club St Patrick's Ath on the opening weekend of the 2016 season and he played in all 33 of Galway's Premier Division matches that year. He also weighed in with twelve league goals and was among new manager Shane Keegan's first re-signings prior to their 2017 campaign. He added four more goals to his career tally, two in both the league and EA Cup, before leaving to join Sligo Rovers on 31st July 2017.
His first competitive appearance for Sligo came as a late substitute against St Patrick's Athletic at the Showgrounds on 5 August 2017 and he went on to score three league goals as the Bit o' Red narrowly avoided relegation. He left Sligo at the end of that season and subsequently signed for Cypriot side PAEEK.
In January 2018, Vinny signed for Galway United ahead of the 2019 season.
