Sam spent two seasons with Hull City's youth side before being released at the end of the 2013/14 season. He returned to Ireland where he hooked up with Keith Long at Athlone Town, playing for Athlone Town in summer friendlies against Dundee United and Queens Park Rangers in July and August of 2014. He made his competitive debut on 9 August 2014, scoring in a 3-1 defeat to Sligo Rovers. He made one other appearance before the season's end as Athlone were relegated to the First Division on the last day of the season.

Sam re-signed for Athlone for the 2015 season in the First Division and made 21 appearances during the season whilst scoring on three occasions. He left the club in December 2015 and signed for Howth Celtic but was only there for two weeks before signing for Pete Mahon at Drogheda United. Sam scored six minutes into his league debut for the Drogs, netting in a 2-1 win against Waterford United on the opening night of the 2016 season. He made 16 league appearances, scoring twice, as Drogheda won promotion through the play-offs. But Sam left Drogheda during the winter break and briefly joined AUL side Baldoyle Grange United before moving north to sign for Aaron Callaghan at Carrick Rangers in January 2017.
