Michael’s Biography

Michael began his playing career at Coleraine before moving to England where he played for Newcastle United. In his time at St James Park he played alongside Paul Gascoigne and finished the 87/88 season as the club's top scorer with 12 goals. He also played at a host of other clubs in England and Scotland including Dundee United, Hibernian, Coventry City and Wigan Athletic. He ended his playing days at Ayr United and made 31 appearances for Northern Ireland, scoring 4 international goals.

Michael's management career started at Scottish club Brechin City in 2006 and in December 2008 he made the move to League of Ireland football when he was took the reins at Shamrock Rovers. His first league game in charge of the Hoops was also Shamrock Rovers' first game at their new home at Tallaght Stadium. Rovers beat Sligo Rovers 1-0 thanks to a strike from Gary Twigg, a player Michael had brought with him from Brechin City.

In three years at Shamrock Rovers Michael won two League titles in 2010 and 2011. He also led the club to the 2010 FAI Cup final, where they lost to Sligo in a penalty shootout, and to Setanta Cup success in 2011. Most notably. Michael guided the Hoops to the Europa League Group stages in 2011, the first time an Irish side had reached that level of European competition.

At the close of the 2011 Michael's contract at Rovers was not renewed and shortly afterwards, on 28 December 2011, he was appointed as manager of the Northern Ireland national team. Martin lead them to qualifying for the 2016 European Championship.
