Stuart was part of Crusaders' 2011/12 side that won the final of the 2012 Setanta Cup. Stuart joined Brentford at the beginning of the 2012 season. Stuart, who was named Northern Ireland Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year for his performances in the 2010/11 season, joined Crusaders in 2010.

Stuart went on to make over sixty league appearances for Brentford over the course of three seasons, taking in a loan spell at Northampton Town as well, before moving to Leeds United in August 2015. He ended the season with five goals in forty-nine appearances for the Whites and was awarded Player's Player of the Year at the club.

Stuart was with Leeds United when he was included in Northern Ireland's squad for the 2016 European Championship.
