League Report: Derry City 0 - 2 Bohemians

Mon, Apr 29 2019

Odhrán Crumley reports from the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium

Bohemians have made it four league games unbeaten with a deserved 2-0 win over Derry City in the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.

Second half strikes from Danny Mandroiu and Dinny Corcoran after a weak Greg Sloggett back-pass sealed all three points, prompting another fine rendition of the ‘Auld Triangle’ from the Bohs faithful.

The game began in frantic fashion with attacking play a central feature from the outset as the game ebbed and flowed from end to end.

Derry had the first effort of the game as ex-Bohs man Eoghan Stokes struck a speculative effort from over thirty yards, prompting James Talbot to watch it all the way before it fell to the left and wide.

Bohs replied almost immediately through Kevin Devaney, the winger entered the area from the left and his low effort forced Peter Cherrie into making a fine diving save.

On the counter, Declan Devine’s men attacked through some neat footwork from Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe, he teed up Stokes but, his effort across the face of goal trailed wide, despite the early promise.

Midway through the half, the home team had a real chance to hit the front after Darren Cole was cynically fouled in the middle of the field.

Ciaran Harkin clipped the ball in towards the back post where it appeared that Greg Sloggett had a free header but, the defender failed to make contact and the chance was gone.

Neither side could trouble the opposition goal before the break as the sides went in as they had began for half-time.

Bohs got the second-half off the perfect start as Danny Mandroiu broke the deadlock after a fine flowing, passing move.

Dinny Corcoran slipped Mandroiu in behind and, with the Derry defence wide open, the attacker blasted the ball into the roof of the net.

Minutes later, the visitors could have doubled their advantage as Danny Grant jinked and jived in the area before seeing his effort agonisingly, strike the bar.

The Candystripes struggled to get back into the game as Keith Long’s team continued to pin them deep inside their own half.

In response, Declan Devine made a triple substitution with Conor McDermott, Gerardo Bruna and Gianni Seraf entering the fray in the hope of changing the dynamic of the game.

This drastic change almost heralded an immediate response as Jamie McDonagh swung an inch perfect ball into the area.

Greg Sloggett was the target but, he failed to get even the slightest of touches which would have directed the ball into the goal.

Bohs struck the knock-out blow with ten to play after a weak back-pass from Greg Sloggett left Peter Cherrie out to dry and allowed Dinny Corcoran to nip in and tap the ball into the empty net.

The rest of the game passed off without incident with the second visiting goal killing off the Derry challenge despite the four minutes of additional time.
