It’s EA Sports Cup time once again as the First Round of the competition gets underway tonight with Eamonn Deacy Park playing host to Galway United versus Mayo League.
GALWAY UNITED
Galway play just their second competitive home game of the season after the fixture computer forced Dunne’s men to play three of their opening four League games away from home.
Back to back wins to start the season, including a major upset on the opening night in which the Tribesmen beat Pats 3-1 in Dublin, saw the Westerners get their season off to the perfect start. This has since been halted as a score draw away in Sligo was followed up by a 2-1 defeat in Derry last Friday night, with the Candystripes scoring twice in the last fifteen minutes of play to secure the three points, has meant that Galway will be keen to get back to winning ways following a disappointing week.
With a small squad Dunne will be keen to rotate as much as possible in order to keep his troops fresh for this coming Saturday’s game against Bohemians and we may well see a number of the clubs under nineteen players getting the nod to start in front of a home crowd.
MAYO LEAGUE
It is safe to say that the Mayo League are an outfit which the majority of the Irish footballing public are unaware of.
One thing though that is certain is their annual appearance in the EA Sports Cup although the fact that they have only managed to score once in their past five outings would not fill the local Mayo population with massive expectations as the select side prepare to take on Tommy Dunne’s men.
