Live Updates for Shamrock Rovers -v- Dundalk

Updates by

90' + 4'

Full time and Dundalk deserved 2-0 winners, but not a game that will live long in the memory for the standard of football. Rovers were poor, Dundalk clinical and professional, but both sides will play much better this season. That's all from me, Dave Donnelly. Keep an eye on Extratime.ie for Aaron Clarke's match report coming soon.

90' + 4'

FULL TIME!

The game has ended between Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk.

90' + 3'

Yellow Card

Killian Brennan is booked for Shamrock Rovers.

90' + 1'

John Mountney tries to make it 3-0 in stoppage time but he can only toe-poke his shot wide.

90'

Three minutes added.

89'

Ronan Finn announced as man of the match by RTE... not a popular decision that on the Rovers side. Not a popular decision in the press box either - Horgan and Meenan the stand-outs tonight.

84'

Close from Brandon Miele as he intercepts a poor pass in midfield and runs at the defence, but he can't get his left-footed shot on target.

84'

Yellow Card

David Webster is booked for Shamrock Rovers.

81'

Substitution

Trevor Clarke replaces Michael Drennan for Shamrock Rovers.

79'

Rovers are leaving lots of room now for Dundalk to break into and a third seems inevitable at some point in the next few minutes.

77'

Substitution

John Mountney replaces Darren Meenan for Dundalk.

77'

McEleney shoots wide from the edge of the box It was always curling away.

75'

It goes from bad to worse for Rovers as Simon Madden is pinged for a foul throw.. he was about three feet on the pitch. Referee Neil Doyle turns it over to Dundalk.

73'

Substitution

Patrick McEleney replaces David McMillan for Dundalk.

72'

Somehow Rovers don't pull one back as Madden is played in behind Massey by Miele and he fizzes the ball across goal but nobody is anticipating the cross. That's their best chance of the game... their only chance.

68'

And it requires a great intervention from Gavin Brennan to clear Horgan's shot off the line after he'd beaten Murphy. Finn had set up the initial chance by taking the ball beyond Murphy, but his touch took him too wide.

67'

It's not pretty. God knows it's not pretty. But Dundalk are doing a great job of shutting Rovers down completely.

65'

McMillan misses another sitter as Meenan breaks the offside trap and squares for the striker, but from six yards out he fails to make contact.

64'

They may be two goals down but the Rovers fans are in full voice. And so they should be - it's a nice evening.

62'

Penalty shout for Dundalk as Gannon's cross appears to hit Killian Brennan's arm, but it would have been harsh.

61'

Nothing really happening. It's been a poor game.

52'

Substitution

Danny North replaces Dean Clarke for Shamrock Rovers.

52'

The game is set to really open up now as Dean Clarke, who was ineffective tonight, is subbed off for Danny North.

50'

Great run from Sean Gannon as he powers into the box and it takes a superb save down low from Barry Murphy to deny Dundalk a third.

46'

GOAL!

Tallaght's most popular man Ronan Finn makes it 2-0 just after the break as a swift counter attack sees McMillan find Horgan, who crosses for Meenan, who nods it back to Finn to slam home from 12 yards.

46'

The second half is underway. Stephen O'Donnell hasn't recovered from that nasty tackle that saw Gary McCabe sent off, and Robbie Benson is on for him as expected.

46'

Second Half

The second half between Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk has started.

46'

Substitution

Robbie Benson replaces Stephen O'Donnell for Dundalk.

45' + 2'
Safe to say the Dundalk media have been more entertaining than the football thusfar.

45' + 2'

Dundalk lead by the solitary goal at half time, but in truth this is a 0-0 in all but reality. Neither team has shown an awful lot of quality, but in Daryl Horgan Dundalk have the sole creative force on the pitch and it was his run that eventually led to the goal. Rovers captain Gary McCabe saw red for a crazy uncaptainlike tackle on Stephen O'Donnell that still might force his opposite number off at half time, but with a man advantage you'd expect the champions to take control in the second 45.

45' + 2'

Half Time

It is half-time between Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk.

45' + 2'

On the stroke of half-time, Rovers fail to deal with a Dundalk corner but it's just about scrambled free as a black shirt gets ready to pounce.

45'

Robbie Benson was preparing to come on for Dundalk but it looks like O'Donnell will try and make it to half time at least.

44'

Rovers doing all the pushing as the half draws to a close and they've forced a corner. Meanwhile O'Donnell is injured in the centre. He took a hell of a blow in that tackle with McCabe.

43'

Here's that Gary McCabe red card.

41'

Dundalk haven't really kicked on since the red card and if anything Rovers are taking the game to them. Simon Madden perhaps a little lucky to escape a booking for going down easily under Horgan's challenge.

37'

The Dundalk media in the press box in full agreement that Neil Doyle will even this up with a Dundalk red card. Getting their excuses in early anyway...

35'

Yellow Card

Daryl Horgan is booked for Dundalk.

34'

This will change the dynamic of the game again. Dundalk had set up very defensively and looked to hit Rovers with speed, but now they'll look to finish this off before half time.

31'

McCabe given a straight red for a two-footed tackle on former team mate Stephen O'Donnell.

31'

Red Card

Gary McCabe is sent off for Shamrock Rovers.

29'

Another hairy moment for Rovers as Gavin Brennan dives in on Meenan and doesn't make contact with the ball, but the winger stays on his feet and has his cross deflected wide. The resulting corner is headed past the post.

27'

Daryl Horgan is running the show here for Dundalk. Shrugs off the challenge of Pat Cregg and plays a lovely reverse pass for McMillan between the centre-halves, but they do just enough to force the striker to poke wide.

25'

Simon Madden picks out Dean Clarke on a run into the box, but the winher's flick-on is nowhere near any of his team mates.

22'

Horgan looking dangerous again as he lofts a cross into the box, only for Gavin Brennan to clear, before Mikey Drennan and Brandon Miele combine well on the break, forcing Brian Gartland to clean up.

19'

That goals knocked the stuffing out of the home team a little bit - I'm not sure they can quite believe it after all their early possession. It all came from Horgan forcing that corner out on the left.

16'

OWN GOAL!

Dundalk take the lead against the run of play as Darren Meenan's cross is inadvertently turned into his own net by Dave Webster.

15'

First real moment of danger as Daryl Horgan beats doppelganger Simon Madden for pace and bears in on goal, but a great covering tackle from David Webster forces the corner, which comes to nothing.

14'

Drennan ruled offside again as McCabe lofts one over the top of the defence... that one looked a lot tighter.

12'

Not much action to report here as neither side is giving an inch in defence. Rovers with the vast majority of the ball but not doing much with it.

10'

Boos ring out from the East Stand as former Hoop Ronan Finn has his first involvement in the game.

7'

Dundalk have been uncharacteristically direct so far with Gary Rogers aiming all his goal kicks towards David McMillan. Perhaps an idea of why when Sean Gannon's short clearance is intercepted by Gavin Brennan in the Lilywhites' half, but it comes to nothing.

2'

An early statement of intent from the Hoops as McCabe plays Drennan through on goal, but he'd timed his run fractionally off.

1'

It's off in Tallaght with the home side playing into the Square end first half.

1'

GAME ON!

The game between Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk has kicked off.

0'

Moments away from kick-off...

The teams are in and both managers have been forced into one change from last week's league selections. Dean Clarke replaces Gary Shaw for Rovers, as the big striker fails to make the squad presumably through injury, while Chris Shields comes in for Ciaran Kilduff after the similarly big striker suffered a back fracture. Luke Byrne returns to the bench for Rovers following a lengthy lay-off. while Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny has been forced to name three members of the under-19 squad in his reserve arsenal.

Hello and welcome to Extratime.ie's coverage of Shamrock Rovers versus league leaders Dundalk from Tallaght Stadium. Some say we don't deserve a spot in the press box, but we've got two here tonight: I'm Dave Donnelly and I'm joined to my right by Aaron Clarke, who'll be reporting after the final whistle. Reach me and Aaron on Twitter @YeSecondPost @Aaron_c91, or hit up HQ directly at @ExtratimeNews.
