Finn Harps celebrated their return to the Premier Division for the first time since 2008 with a 2-1 victory against local rivals Derry City in front of a huge crowd at Finn Park.

On the opening night when bragging rights were available in the north-west derby, it was the visitors who had the game’s first opportunity inside the opening minute, but Jordan Allen flashed his shot wide of Ciaran Gallagher's goal.

With the home side struggling to find their footing in the game, Derry continued to push forward in the opening quarter of an hour and had another opportunity when Gareth McGlynn latched onto a Rory Patterson cross, however Harps' Damien McNulty throw his body in the line of fire to block the effort.

As the home gradually found their way back into the game, both Ryan Curran and Adam Hanlon had efforts on goal, however Hanlon failed to trouble Gerard Doherty in the City goal.

On the stroke of half-time, Harps broke the deadlock through David Scully, who headed home from a corner on his league debut for the Donegal side after signing from Bray Wanderers.

In a second half that saw opportunities on goal limited, Harps doubled their lead with 14 minutes remaining when Curran fired home against his old club.

Minutes later, Curran had an opportunity to extend his side lead even further, but his effort was well saved by Doherty in the visiting goal.

With the game in additional time, Derry pulled a goal back when Patterson fired home for his first goal since returning from FC of Manchester.
