Cork City have missed out on the signing of York City striker Liam Henderson after the player decided not to make the move to Turner’s Cross.

The 22 year old forward has struggled to make an impact with the Minstermen since joining from Watford last summer and was in talks with the Irish club over a potential transfer. Henderson has made just six appearances for York with four of those coming off the bench.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Forest Green Rovers where he scored just once in seventeen games but York boss Gary Mills confirmed he wouldn’t be moving to the Airtricity League.

"Liam Henderson won't be going to Cork," City manager Mills explained. "He was given the opportunity but didn't want to go."

Henderson has already been involved in all three of the Minstermen's pre-season games to date, even netting late on in the 8-0 victory over Huntington Rovers last week. But reports surfaced prior to the latest one against Pickering Town that Cork were preparing to take over his contract.

The English-born striker started his career at Watford but spent spells with Hartlepool, Colchester, Aldershot and Rotherham during his time at Vicarage Road before being released by the Hornets at the end of the 2010/11 season. He was snapped up by York on a free transfer and partnered former Sligo Rovers striker Matthew Blinkhorn in the City attack.

Tommy Dunne was in search of a new goal scorer after Tadhg Purcell’s loan spell with the Leesiders ended.

It’s a busy period for the Rebel Army with friendlies against Watford, Manchester United XI and Blackburn Rovers wedged in between domestic action.
