FAI writes to Sport Ireland regarding the resumption of amateur adult and underage football

The FAI have announced that they have written to Sport Ireland to try and get a better understanding of what the Government’s easing of restrictions road map means for it’s amateur and underage league’s and clubs.

Little has been revealed as to how much closer we might be to seeing SSE Airtricity League football back and it does appear like we are some way away from seeing crowds back in League of Ireland grounds with those talks amongst the clubs and the league continuing.

FAI Interim CEO Niall Quinn outlined to FAI.ie; “We have submitted a series of questions to Sport Ireland seeking clarity on the five phases of easing the COVID-19 restrictions, as outlined in the Roadmap for Reopening Society and Business.”

The FAI, as they have done since the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis saw football suspended across the country, will be taking guidance from the HSE with their medical director Dr. Alan Byrne continuing to be in very close contact with medical officials.

“Our Medical Director Dr. Alan Byrne is liaising with the HSE and the Department of Sport on the conditions that will facilitate a safe return for our players, coaches, volunteers and referees at the earliest opportunity.

“As soon as we have that detailed information, we will issue guidelines for our leagues and clubs on a return to training and action. We thank them for their patience and understanding as we gather all information before making the best decision for all concerned.

“Football will be back when the time is right. In the meantime, we thank all our members for obeying the lockdown and urge them to continue to follow HSE guidelines.”
