NIFL Championship side Ards organise special lunch for NHS workers battling coronavirus at Ulster Hospital

The players and staff of NIFL Championship side Ards have organised a special lunch for the NHS workers at the Ulster Hospital as they continue the battle to save lives from coronavirus.

The Newtownards-based club made the gesture in order to show their appreciation to the staff risking their lives and working on the frontlines.

The squad and management team have also organised a collection for the Newtownards Foodbank campaign.

“We’ve organised a lunch for the NHS staff in the Ulster Hospital,” said Ards first team player Craig McMillen.

“I just want to thank yous from all the players. What yous are doing is an unbelievable job. 13-hour shifts, trying to save lives, putting your own lives at risk, I really do take my hat off.

“I hope everyone is staying safe, staying at home, because that’s the only we can beat this. And once this is over, we can get back to doing Saturdays playing football and the supporters watching.”

He added: “During the week, the manager, the coaching staff and the players were all talking, thinking about what we could do to help in this situation.

“So we’ve come together and organised to work with Sam Magill, who’s doing a great, great job trying to organise the food bank. He’s working alongside Thriving Life Church in Ards.

“I was talking to him during the week and seeing what essentials they need at this difficult time. So we’ve worked out what they need and got it all sorted for them.

“I just want to say thank you, because what yous are doing, you might think it’s only a wee bit, but for people out there it’s a massive feed.”
