Simon Cox sets up late equaliser as West Sydney Wanderers hold A-League leaders Sydney

Simon Cox assisted a late equaliser as Western Sydney Wanderers held A-League leaders Sydney FC to a 1-1 draw in the Sydney Derby at the Bankwest Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Adam Le Fondre netted his 17th goal of the season to put the Sky Blues ahead but Kwame Yeboah scored his third of the campaign to equalise for Wanderers with ten minutes to go.

Sydney went into the game knowing that a win would see them hit the 50-point mark for the fourth consecutive season.

The Sky Blues who started the game on top and they created the first opening of the match when Le Fondre was played in but he shot straight at Daniel Lopar in the Wanderers goal.

In a first half that Sydney dominated, it was Le Fondre who had the next chance as he linked up well with Kosta Barbarouses but his effort was once again dealt with by Lopar.

Jean-Paul de Marigny's side had their first chance on 30 minutes when Jordan O'Doherty hit a free-kick from close range straight at Andrew Redmayne.

Sydney hit the front foot on 35 minutes when Miloš Ninkovi? played Barbarouses in one-on-one with Lopar.

Barbarouses’ shot was saved by Lopar, however he could only palm the ball into the path of Le Fondre who slotted into the empty net.

Sydney had the final chance of the first half when Rhyan Grant, who was making his 18th Sydney Derby appearance, the most of all time, flashed his effort wide from just outside the box.

Wanderers started the second half on top and Russell Tate, who scored his first goal for the club last week, was played in but he fired his effort low across the face of goal and wide.

It was the turn of Yeboah next to try and get Wanderers back on terms after he was played in but he dragged his effort wide of goal when well placed to score.

Sydney could have doubled their advantage just past the hour but Lopar did well to gather following a cross from Alexander Baumjohann.

Eight minutes later Baumjohann was involved again as his effort from range looked to be sailing in but Matthew Jurman was on hand to make a crucial block.

As an end-to-end, high-intensity affair drew to a close, Sydney had a brilliant opportunity to wrap the points up.

Harry Van Der Saag was played in on goal but he shot instead of squaring for Le Fondre, who would have surely scored.

This would come back and bite Graham Arnold's side as Wanderers grabbed an equaliser when Cox’s shot from the edge of the box deflected off Yeboah and bounced over Redmayne and into the net.

Cox then had an opportunity to win it as he was played into the box but fired his low effort into the hands of Redmayne.
