Wes Hoolahan and Jay O'Shea feature as Robbie Fowler's Brisbane Roar end Newcastle Jets' unbeaten run

Wes Hoolahan and Jay O’Shea all featured as Robbie Fowler's Brisbane Roar ended Newcastle Jets’ unbeaten run with a 1-0 win.

Bobby Burns played 75 minutes and Roy O’Donovan hit the post for the losing side as the Roar won three in a row for the first time under Fowler and ended Jets’ unbeaten start under Carl Robinson.

Former Celtic and Middlesbrough forward Scott McDonald scored his fourth goal of the season and has now netted in three consecutive A-League games.

It could have been different for the Jets, who hit the post with the final kick of the ball as O'Donovan was denied after connecting with a low cross from Dimitri Petratos.

It was the home side who started the game on top as O'Shea created the first opening on seven minutes but his low effort was well saved by Lewis Italiano in the Jets goal.

Robinson's side created their first opening when O'Donovan linked up well with Matthew Millar but the latter's effort lacked power and sailed wide.

Fowler's side hit the front on 16 minutes when McDonald was played in and, from a tight angle, wrong-footed Italiano before slotting the ball into the net.

Jets were finding it hard to break down the resolute Roar defence as Steven Ugarkovic tried his luck from long range but the ball sailed just over the crossbar.

Hoolahan then had a half chance the visitors but he couldn't connect well from a low Burns cross and the ball was cleared by Jack Hingert.

Tom Aldred came to Roars rescue on 34 minutes as former Sunderland striker O'Donovan got behind the defence but was denied by an excellent tackle from the former Blackpool defender.

On the stroke of half-time Brisbane created a fine opportunity to double their lead when McDonald fired a low shot across goal but Italiano was on hand to gather.

It was the Roar who started the second half on top and Italiano was forced into an excellent save on 51 minutes when he pushed an Aldred shot away for a corner.

Burns then came to his side’s rescue 10 minutes later as O'Shea jinked his way into the area but the Northern Ireland international got across to make a crucial tackle.

Fowler's side could have wrapped up the points with twenty minutes to go as Italiano came to the Jets rescue again when for former Newcastle youth product Brad Inman was played in on goal.

In the final chance of the game O'Donovan hit the post in a rare clear-cut chance for the Jets as he hit the post following a cross from Petratos.
