James McClean makes generous donation to Covid-19 relief efforts in Derry

James McClean has made a donation to help elderly people, families with young children, and people under pressure as a result of the COVID-19 crisis in his home city of Derry.

The Republic of Ireland and Stoke City winger has been at the forefront of numerous charitable initiatives over the years and has once again stepped up to show leadership in a time of need.

"We've made a donation towards nappies, medicines, toilet roll, baby supplies, cleaning products etc,” McClean told the Derry Journal.

“[This] will be made into hampers and given out at the 'Corned Beef Tin' over the next few days when the full stock is brought in," he revealed on Wednesday.

He said it had been difficult to source large quantities of items but the charity drive was being facilitated by a few runs to local wholesalers.

"It's a small gesture but one I hope can go a long way in helping. Hopefully this virus is gone soon and people can get on with their lives as normal but for now I hope everyone stays safe and well."

McClean is on the recovery from injury as he damaged his medial ligament back in February, putting his participation in the Republic of Ireland’s play-off with Slovakia in doubt.

He has performed very well for the Potters since Micheal O'Neill's appointment, managing six goals and three assists in the Championship this campaign.

O'Neill restored McClean to left wing from left back in his very first game in charge in a 4-2 away win at Barnsley in November.
