Wes Hoolahan and Roy O'Donovan play in Newcastle Jets victory

Bobby Burns registered an assist as Newcastle Jets claimed a 3-0 victory away to Adelaide United on Sunday at the Hindmarsh Stadium.

The win was their sixth consecutive victory and their biggest ever win against Adelaide who fell to their fourth consecutive defeat.

It was Burns 15th appearance for the Jets who is loan in Australia from Scottish Premier League side Hearts.

Wes Hoolahan also came into the starting lineup for the first time in the A League since he picked up an ankle injury in September and Joe Ledley made his Jets debut as a late substitute.

The Jets scored in the 41st minute with a quick passing move that ended up with Dimitri Petratos playing in Roy O'Donovan for a tap-in and his 3rd goal in 5 A League matches this campaign.

It was Carl Robinson's side who extended their lead after the break as on 51 minutes Nigel Boogard played a long ball forward that opened up the United defence and Matthew Miller slotted beyond Paul Izzo.

Three minutes later, the Jets sealed the victory when Steve Ugarkovic headed home when he latched onto a superb cross from former Glenavon man Burns.

Burns then could have had another assist in the final few moments of the game when he whipped in another low cross for former Sunderland and Cork striker O'Donovan but he saw his effort sail wide.

"We’re giving ourselves a glimmer of hope,” O’Donovan said about his side’s top six hopes.

“That’s all it is but we have some big games to come hopefully but tonight we were good value.

“We tested Adelaide and we took our chances when they came along.”
