Darren Meenan re-signs for Athlone as Adrian Carberry's side take shape for 2020

First Division Athlone Town have confirmed the re-signing of former Premier Division league winning midfielder Darren Meenan ahead of the 2020 season.

News of Meenan’s re-signing for the Blue and Black of the Midlands follows the news that John Morgan has also re-joined.

Elsewhere, Evan O’Connor and Adam Rooney have also joined the club from Longford Town and Galway United respectively.

Meenan began his career playing with St Joseph's Boys in Dublin before signing for Finn Harps.

He also played for Monaghan United, UCD, Shelbourne, Sligo Rovers, Drogheda United and St Pats before signing for Dundalk in 2013 where he won three League titles and a FAI Cup.

After his spell at Shamrock Rovers, he joined Longford Town, before linking up with Athlone in 2019.

Former Wexford forward John Morgan also returns to the Athlone fold for 2020 having featured for the club last term.

The former IT Carlow student was named in 24 out of the 27 possible league match squads for 2019 under previous manager Terry Butler.

Central defender Evan O’Connor joins Athlone from near neighbours Longford Town, where he was named the in the club’s under-17s squad at the age of just 14.

He has made one senior league appearance in the League of Ireland previously with Longford, in their 4-1 win away to Galway United in 2018.  



Also joining Carberry’s charges for 2020 is defender Adam Rooney, a former Irish Schools International.  

The former under-19 Galway United defender has played a key role in the Tribesmen’s recent underage exploits, as he follows Joshua Keane-Quinlivan to Athlone from Corribside.
