First Division Drogheda 'dismayed' at lack of government funding for new stadium

Drogheda United have expressed their disappointment at the government decision not to grant funding for the building of a new stadium in the town.

In a statement on Twitter the club said, “Drogheda United are dismayed at the decision not to award first stage funding for a new stadium under the Large Scale Sports Infrastructure Grants, at a time when out town needs community sporting facilities more than ever.”

In July 2018 an agreement was announced between the FAI and Louth County Council to build a new 3,000 seater stadium, with potential to increase to 10,000, in north Drogheda.

The plan was for a municipal facility in the area including a number of full size pitches as well as smaller artificial pitches.

The Boynesiders were set to be the main tenants of the proposed new facility along with their Under 19, Under 17, Under 15 and Under 13 teams.

“Drogheda United are dismayed at the decision not to award first stage funding for a new stadium under the Large Scale Sports Infrastructure Grants, at a time when out town needs community sporting facilities more than ever.

“We urge all supporters to question all candidates in the General Election about this issue.  We need a new stadium for sports in Drogheda. A municipal venue to benefit everyone.

“We will continue to look at all options for funding, both public and private. Drogheda WILL get a new stadium.”
