Former Irish international Mark Kennedy unveiled as new Macclesfield Town boss

League Two side Macclesfield Town have unveiled former Republic of Ireland international Mark Kennedy as their new manager.

The Dubliner has signed an initial deal until the end of the 2019/2020 season and he will be assisted by former Crystal Palace teammate Danny Butterfield and Macclesfield stalwart Danny Whitaker.

Kennedy began his professional career with Millwall before moving on to Liverpool in 1995 for a fee of £1.5 million which made him the most expensive teenage footballer in British history.

He then went on to play for Wimbledon, Manchester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crystal Palace, Cardiff City before retiring in 2012 while with Ipswich Town.

The 43 year old made 34 appearances for the Republic of Ireland senior team scoring four goal and he just missed out on the 2002 World Cup due to injury.

Relegation threatened Macclesfield are currently in 22nd place in League Two and Kennedy’s first game in charge will see The Silkmen travel away to face Colchester this Saturday (kick-off 3pm).
