Irish midfielder Aaron Molloy has been drafted as the 16th overall pick by the Portland Timbers in the MLS SuperDraft.
The former Drogheda United player, who is the son of former League of Ireland striker Trevor Molloy, moved to America midway through the 2016 First Division season to spend his freshman year in Keiser University.
After playing for Reading United in the Premier Development League, Molloy’s performances got noticed and he moved to Penn State.
Since 2018, Molloy has been Penn State’s captain, earning numerous awards along the away, including this season, the Big Ten’s Midfielder of the Year, being named a MAC Hermann Trophy Semi-finalist and being named Second Team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches.
Molloy, who turns 23 on Saturday, scored nine goals and assisted six this season in 19 games.
