Terry Butler appointed Leixlip United boss after Athlone departure

Former Athlone Town boss Terry Butler has been appointed as the new manager of Leinster Senior League outfit Leixlip United.

Butler saw his rein in charge of First Division ended last week, before Adrian Carberry was installed as the new manager of the Lissywoolen outfit on Tuesday evening.

Butler took over the reins of the Midlander’s following the exit of previous boss Aaron Callaghan, who left the club in May 2018.

Since taking over as permanent boss, Butler was tasked with a rebuild of sorts at the Co. Westmeath club, as he steered his side off the bottom of the First Division table in 2019.

Following Limerick’s points deduction, Athlone came in 8th position in the 2019 league standings, with 18 points to their name.

The former Bohemians assistant boss’ final game in charge of Athlone was in the Leinster Senior Cup final, as a young St Patrick’s Athletic swept aside the challenge of the Blue and Black of the Midlands by four goals to nil.

A statement from his new club Leixlip United read; “Leixlip Utd are delighted to announce the appointment of Terry Butler as our new first team manager.

“Terry brings a wealth of experience to the job. He most recently managed Athlone Town in the First Division of the SSE Airtricity League and has had a long and successful career in the LOI and the Leinster Senior League.

“We feel that Terry has the expertise and experience to build on the solid foundations that exist in our club and we look forward to working with him over the coming seasons.”
