Cummins commits to a second stint with Waterford

Graham Cummins is back with the Blues for 2020. The striker's second spell at Waterford come after a frustrating loan spell at Shamrock Rovers.

He last wore a Blues shirt in the 2009 season when he grabbed 17 goals from 28 games.

“I’m really excited to be back in Waterford," said Cummins. "It feels right to come back. At this stage of my career, it more about enjoying the football, and from speaking to Alan (Reynolds) that’s something I think I can do here.

“I have a lot of good memories from playing down here before, and obviously the club has pushed on in a big way over the last few years.

"Obviously our main focus will be winning games and driving on again, but personally I want to enjoy my football again and do what strikers are supposed to do and find the back of the net.

The 31-year-old player becomes the sixth player to sign for the Blues, with Will Fitzgerald, Dean Walsh, John Martin and Shane Griffin all signing on with the Blues for 2020, along with Sam Bone who was announced earlier on Friday.

“Graham is a great addition to the club, and I’m delighted for him to return to Waterford,” said Blues boss Alan Reynolds.

“We’ve spoken, and at this stage of his career, he wants to enjoy playing. I understand that, and I’m delighted that he feels that he’ll enjoy it here.

“Signing a player of his stature in the league is a sign of intent from us.”

Cummins will bring valuable experience to the Blues squad for 2020 having played with Preston North End, Rochdale, Exeter City and St. Johnstone during six seasons in the UK before he returned to Cork City in 2017.

He left the Leesiders in the mid-season to join Rovers on loan. He scored three league goals for the Hoops from eight league appearances but got limited game time in Tallaght.

The forward was hindered by picking up a concussion in Turner’s Cross when he played for Rovers against City at the end of July.

He didn’t make the Shamrock Rovers match day squad for last month’s FAI Cup final with Stephen Bradley including 18-year-old Thomas Oluwa on the subs bench in Cummins’ place.
