Drogheda United snap up former Dundalk 'keeper Ross Treacy

First Division promotion hunters Drogheda United have unveiled the signing of former Dundalk goalkeeper Ross Treacy.

Treacy failed to make the breakthrough at Oriel Park – with both Gary Rogers and Aaron McCarey both ahead of the 21-year-old in the pecking order.

He joined the Lilywhites from Swansea City, before struggling to make the breakthrough under both Stephen Kenny and Vinny Perth.

The 19th confirmed member of Tim Clancy’s squad ahead of the 2020 season told his club’s media team; “Tim got in touch with me at the end of the season and offered me the opportunity to come to the club.

“Based on what he said, and how close they came last season, it was a no brainer.

“I had to, I couldn’t turn it down, I can see us going the full way this season, again. The squad, the players, I’m just looking forward to be a part of it.”

The 21-year-old added that he was aided significantly by Gary Rogers, with the Meath native being a great influence on the young ‘keeper.

“Day in day out, training, he (Gary Rogers) never stops. He’s great to learn off. He holds records of appearances, clean sheets, everything you want to do as a goalkeeper, he holds it.

“Every day he comes in and had a great attitude, I couldn’t have picked anyone better to learn off.

“He’s been there, done it all and is still doing it at the highest level. It can only make you better as a keeper, it’s been a great process learning off him and Aaron McCarey, another experienced keeper. It can only benefit me in the long run.

“I’ll just be putting the head down and get back to doing what I’m good at. I’ll be trying to get into the team, impressing the manager, getting to know all the lads.

“If I get into the team, it’s up to me to stay there and try push the club to where it’s should be, in the Premier Division by getting promotion.”
