Walter Figueira swaps Waterford for Declan Devine's Candystripes

EA Sports Cup runners-up Derry City have unveiled the signing of former Waterford forward Walter Figueira ahead of the 2020 campaign.

The 24 year old scored twice in an earlier trip to the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium this year – after arriving at the RSC from Merstham FC.

The former Chelsea youth joined the 2012 Champions League winners in 2010 – before having spells with Platanias, Moura and Dulwich Hamlet.

The forward joins Devine’s charges ahead of the 2020 campaign following news of Darren McCauley’s departure in recent days.

Signing for Waterford halfway through the 2019 season – he scored in wins against both Cork City and Sligo Rovers respectively.

And despite being linked with a move to Scotland, Figueira is set to remain in the League of Ireland for another year at least – joining the Candystripes ahead of the 2020 campaign.

Derry City boss Declan Devine told his club’s media team; “Walter is a quality player. Derry fans who saw him play for Waterford against us in the Brandywell will know exactly the type of player we’ve brought here.

“He wants to play every minute of every match and that’s what we need at this club.

“He had a host of offers from clubs in Ireland and Scotland, so we are delighted to have secured his signing.

“Walter obviously won’t be the last player coming in. The hard work continues to strengthen the squad ahead of what is certain to be a fiercely competitive league in 2020.”
