Athlone Town reach Leinster Senior Cup final

First Division Athlone Town have reached the Leinster Senior Cup final where they will either face Sheriff YC or St Patrick’s Athletic in the decider.

The clash between Sheriff and the Athletic is due to take on the weekend of November 1st, with the final set to take place a week later.

However, times and venues have yet to be decided as of yet. This will be Athlone Town’s ninth Leinster Senior Cup final that they have taken part in.

The three-time cup winners first appearance in the final occurred in the 1895-96 season, where they met Bohemians in the final, losing 3-1.

Their last appearance in the Leinster Senior Cup final came all the way back in the 1998-99 campaign, where Athlone were defeated by Wayside Celtic in the final.

On their way to the final this year, Terry Butler’s side have seen off Dundalk and UCD to reach the final two of the tournament.

The Blue and Black of the Midlands were due to face Bohemians in the semi-final, but that game appears to have been given as a win for the Midlander’s – with the Gypsies pulling out of the competition.

Bohemians reached the semi-final stage after seeing off Wexford junior outfit North End United at Dalymount Park last week.
