Troy Parrott makes senior debut, Nathan Collins sees red and Michael Obafemi stars in Carabao Cup

Republic of Ireland under-21 striker Troy Parrott played 65 minutes on his senior debut as Tottenham Hotspur were humiliated by League Two Colchester United in the Carabao Cup.

Spurs were beaten on penalties by the Essex club as Lucas Moura and Parrott’s replacement Christian Eriksen missed their spot-kicks after the game finished scoreless.

17-year-old Parrott led the line with Harry Kane rested for the weekend and performed well but couldn’t find the target despite eking out a few half-chances.

He pulled one shot wide of the target, thanks to a deflection, early in the first half and headed just over at the beginning of the second half before making way for Eriksen.

There was a happier return to action for Ireland striker Michael Obafemi as he made his first appearance since picking up a minor injury ahead of the international window.

Obafemi helped himself to an assist for Danny Ings’ second goal in a 4-0 win over Portsmouth in the south coast derby at Fratton Park.

Ronan Curtis played 90 minutes for Pompey while Shane Long played the final eight minutes, forcing a save from Craig MacGillivray.

Nathan Collins was shown a straight red card for a mistimed lunge in the second half as Stoke City were dumped out on penalties by Crawley Town.

Stephen Ward played 90 minutes for Stoke while Scott Hogan also played an hour, while Reece Grego-Cox played the duration up front for Crawley.

Alan Browne and Joe Rafferty played the full game as Preston North End were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Manchester City at Deepdale.

And Alan Sheehan played the full game as Luton Town succumbed to a 4-0 defeat at home to Premier League Leicester City.

Ireland under-21 goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is in line to make his senior bow when Liverpool travel to MK Dons on Wednesday night.
