Oscar Brennan: 'There was talk at the start of the season that we would walk all over teams - but we didn't think that at the time and it hasn't happened'

Going into the 2019 campaign as searing title favourites, Shelbourne have not had it all their own way so far this season.

After a slow start, the Reds have slowly clicked into gear, and they are now just a win in Drogheda away from securing their return to the top-flight after a seven year absence.

Speaking on this week’s Extratime.ie Sportscast Episode 160– Shels midfield star Oscar Brennan admits that this year’s First Division has gone exactly how he expected it to.

“We go into ever game with the same mentality of we want to win. To be fair, we’ve not had an easy game so far this year. Every single game we’ve been in has been competitive.

“There was talk at the start of the season that we would walk all over teams. But we didn’t think that at the time, and it hasn’t happened that way at all. I think it’s a really strong league.”

With such a tantalising tie in the offing on Friday evening at a sold-out United Park tomorrow evening, Brennan is expecting a difficult test against Drogheda United.

“I don’t think much has separated us through the season,” the 23-year-old added.

“There was a scoreless draw up there at the start of the season and I think we only got a late winner right at the end of the last game at Tolka and I’m sure they’ll say they didn’t deserve to lose on the night.

“I think it’s great that it’s sold out. I know that we sold out our away allocation quickly enough and it’s good to see that Drogheda sold out the rest of the ground as well.

“It should make for a great occasion, it’s a tight pitch, the fans are right on top of you so that’ll add to the atmosphere.

“It’s sort of a league final if you like. If we win it, we win the league and if they win it, they’ll feel they’re in a fantastic position to win it with a game to go.

“I think it will have that cup/league final atmosphere to it. I’m sure it will be a tense, even enough game. There will probably only be a goal in it on the night so it’s one we’re looking forward to.”
