Mick McCarthy: "We'll be as positive and aggressive as we can be against a very good side"

Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy has noted that he will send his side out to be as positive and aggressive as possible ahead of this week’s crunch Euro qualifier against Switzerland.

The Boys in Green head into Thursday evening’s showdown against the Swiss with a point to prove following a laboured two-nil win over Gibraltar in June.

Prior to that, McCarthy saw his side pick up a potentially priceless point away to Denmark in Copenhagen thanks to Shane Duffy’s late equaliser.

And with a make or break clash coming up against the favourites to top the group, McCarthy insists his side will look to take the game to their Swiss counterparts.

“They play Gibraltar straight after us so the last ting we want is them coming here and taking anything off us to be honest,” the former Ipswich Town boss told FAI TV.

“We’ll be going again, trying to win the game and we’ll be as positive and aggressive as we can be against a very good side.

“They missed our games because of their Nations League commitments but they’ll want to be at their game to beat us and finish in the top two.

“I’ve been looking at a few of their games and when Denmark sat off them, I thought Switzerland were brilliant in that first half, scoring three goals.

“Interestingly, Denmark got after them then and it ended up three-all. England got after them and pressed them as well and done well but England have a good side.

“There’s two different set-ups and two different styles that I can use but I know what I’ll be using against them.”
