FAI Cup Preview: St Michael's -v- Glengad United

ST MICHAEL’S

FAI Junior Cup finalists St Michael’s welcome the only other junior side remaining in the competition, Glengad United, to Tipperary on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 3pm).

The Tipperary Town-based side will face Sheriff YC in the FAI Junior Cup final at the Eamonn Deacy Park on August 31st but the Senior Cup comes first.

James Walsh’s side saw off Sheriff to reach this stage of the competition, winning 1-0 thanks to a strike from former Limerick striker Olly O’Driscoll.

And they have history with Glengad too, having beaten them in the semi-finals of the Junior Cup 2-0 at the same venue with goals from Jimmy Carr and Joe Mulcahy.

GLENGAD UNITED

Inishown League champions Glengad United take part in the FAI Senior Cup proper for the first time as they travel to Tipperary Town to face St Michael’s.

The Donegal side made history by defeating 1976 Cup winners Home Farm on penalties in the preliminary round in April.

And, while the trip to Tipperary is among the longest the second northernmost team in the country could make, it’s a winnable tie.

They lost 2-0 at the same venue back in April in the semi-finals of the FAI Junior Cup but the result could easily have gone the other way.

"It pretty much came down to the kick of a ball when we met in the junior cup, and this is definitely one where we could get a result,” manager Shane Byrne told the Donegal Democrat.

"Look, we're never going to win the FAI Cup, but the dream outcome for us would be to get a result here and then draw the likes of Shamrock Rovers away from home in the next round - you just never know."

Referee: John Lyons.
