Conor Davis: "I was really happy to score but I want UCD to stay in this Premier Division more than anyone else"

Having scored his first goal for Derry City on Friday evening, Conor Davis revealed his respect for his former employers UCD who fell to another disappointing defeat at the UCD Bowl.

Davis scored as a substitute in the 72nd minute just moments after coming on for the Candystripes.

“I’m really happy to get the goal,” the 2018 First Division winner told extratime.ie.

“We’ve everything to play for now. There’s 8 league games left and obviously there’s the two cup competitions left as well so hopefully I can add to what I have now.

“I’ve been scoring a lot of goals in training, so I’m delighted to take that from the training ground onto the pitch.

“When you’re at a team like Derry you’re going to get lots of chances with the quality that we have in the final third. It’s just about keeping a cool head and taking those chances when they come.

“No, I didn’t celebrate. UCD did so much for me when I came home from reading. I have a lot of respect for this club.

“I was really happy to score but I want UCD to stay in this Premier Division more than anyone else. I think they can do that if they keep the quality they have, and score loads of goals.”

On his time on Foyleside thus far, the former Reading youngster added that he has enjoyed his time with Declan Devine’s charges.

“It’s good, at Derry it’s a little bit of a step up with training and the intensity. It has been difficult enough to adapt.

“We train on the astro a lot and it’s hard to come from the grass to the astro. It’s been difficult on my body but every session I feel stronger and sharper and I feel ready to kick-on.

“I’m living in Derry now with Greg (Sloggett) and Jamie McDonagh. They’ve been taking care of me really well so far. I’m really happy with how things have gone so far.

“If we can just chalk off each league game between now and the end of the season we’ve got a great chance of making Europe.”
