WNL Report: Limerick 1 - 6 Galway WFC

Paul Corcoran reports from Markets Field

Galway WFC notched up their second win in a row in the Women’s National League when they defeated Limerick 6-1 at Markets Field on Sunday afternoon.

McKenna Doyle scored a hat-trick as goals from Sadbh Doyle, Chloe Singleton, Aoife Thompson and a Limerick own goal all helped the Galway Girls to a resounding win.

Five of the six goals for Galway were assisted by Lynsey McKey during what was a stellar performance from the experienced midfielder.

Galway went ahead just seven minutes into this game after a corner kick from McKey found the head of Chloe Singleton.

Singleton turned the ball into the far side of the net from where the ball came, a perfectly executed set piece by the visitors.

Two minutes later McKey was the provider once again when she tore into the left side of the box and, as Karen Connolly was beginning to leave her line, the midfielder saw the opportunity to square the ball allowing McKenna Doyle to slide in and put the ball in the back of the net.

After the early flurry of goals both sides settled down until the 35th minute when a clearance from a Limerick corner found its way to Marie Curtin outside the box as her long range effort sailed through a crowded box and ended up rattling the net.

Limerick suffered a sucker punch just a minute later when Sadbh Doyle took aim from distance.

Connolly misjudged the effort and the ball struck the crossbar initially before falling over the line to double Galway’s lead once again.

Billy Clery’s side piled on the misery for Limerick in the second half as Galway grabbed their fourth of the day.

Another corner from McKey in the 52nd minute was bundled over the line by the in-form McKenna Doyle, who profited from a hesitancy within the Shannonsiders rear-guard.

In the 68th minute McKey slotted a perfect through ball towards McKenna Doyle to split the defence. Doyle rounded the goalkeeper and tapped the ball into the net for her fourth goal in two appearances.

Finally, 15 minutes from time, Aislinn Meaney threaded a ball forward to McKey on the right flank. The midfielder struck a great ball across goal to set up Aoife Thompson for an easy tap in, scoring her first goal since May.
