Former Chelsea striker Walter Figueira signs with Waterford for remainder of season

Waterford FC have announced the signing of former Chelsea player Walter Figueira until the end of the season.

The striker signed for Chelsea in 2010 and played up to under-21 level until injury halted his progress and he departed Stamford bridge in 2013.

He has gone on to have spells with Hayes and Yeading United, Bognor Regis Town, Wingate and Finchley, and Dulwich Hamlet in the English non-league system.

The 24-year-old also played a season with Platanias in the Greek Superleague and a year with Portuguese third tier club Moura.

His 2018/2019 season saw him score 16 league goals for Merstham in the Isthmian League Premier Division.

“Walter has come in and been around the squad for the last few days. He’s a striker and we’re hoping he hits the ground running,” manager Alan Reynolds said, speaking to the club’s website.

“We have lots of games coming up between now and the end of the season so we needed to have another good option. This will allow us to give guys a good run and look after the players with league and three cups still to play for.”

Figueira is still awaiting international clearance and was not available for his side’s Premier Division defeat away to Derry City tonight.
