The Republic of Ireland take on France in their second game of the 2019 UEFA European Under-19 Championships still searching for their first win.

Tom Mohan’s side were six from six in qualifying – the only team in Europe to achieve the feat – but their winning streak came to an end against Norway on Monday.

Ireland needed a late strike from 16-year-old Joe Hodge to salvage a point from their opening game after Erik Botheim had given the Norwegians an early lead.

France top the group after comfortably seeing off the Czech Republic in their opening game thanks to a brace from Alexis Flips and one from Charles Abi.

A win would take France through to the knockout stages, needing just a point from Norway in their final game to guarantee top spot.

Ireland wouldn’t be out of the competition with a defeat but, realistically, a draw is the minimum requirement to keep them on track for qualification.

For Ireland, the player to watch following his point-saving intervention on the opening day is Manchester City’s 16-year-old midfielder Joe Hodge.

The playmaker’s precision strike to salvage a draw was impressive, but also was his willingness to do the unglamorous things in midfield, though he did pick up a needless early booking.

On the French side, Lille striker Alexis Flips must be considered the dangerman following his brace in the opening-day win over the Czechs.
