Michelle O'Neill to officiate at Saturday's World Cup quarter-final between Germany and Sweden

Irish referee Michelle O’Neill will take charge of Saturday evening’s final World Cup quarter-final between Germany and Sweden in Rennes.

The Wexford native will run the line as assistant to France’s Stephanie Frappart having also taken part in Argentina’s 0-0 draw with Japan and the Netherlands’ 2-1 last 16 win over Canada.

O’Neill made history four years ago when she became the first Irish official to take part in a Women’s World Cup when she was assistant to Carina Vitulano of Italy in two games.

She was also the first Irish official to officiate at a European Championships in the Netherlands in 2017, assisting Monika Mularczyk in two games.

O’Neill is an experienced League of Ireland and Women’s National League referee and was promoted to the National League panel as an assistant in 2010.

She was added to the FIFA panel as an assistant referee in 2011 and has gone on to officiate in two World Cups, one European Championships, the Europa League and Women’s Champions League.
