Megan Campbell signs new one-year deal with Manchester City

Republic of Ireland full-back Megan Campbell has signed a new one-year contract with Manchester City after completing her recovery from a 15-month layoff with a reptured ACL.

The Drogheda native has endured a nightmare two years since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in a Champions League encounter with Kvinner FK in November 2017.

25-year-old Campbell’s time at City has been marred by a succession of serious injuries which have limited her to just 28 appearances in three-and-a-half years.

Torn ankle ligaments sustained at the Cyprus Cup in 2016 delayed her City debut by several months before a serious injury to the other ankle required surgery and an eight-month lay-off.

She returned to play a starring role in the club’s 4-0 FA Cup final win over Birmingham City in 2017, which sealed the league and cup double, only to suffer the ACL injury months later.

“I’m very excited to get going again, starting as a new player almost,” Campbell told the club’s official website.

“I’ve been out for so long injured so I’m looking forward to the challenge. I’m looking forward to coming in and fighting for my place. My thoughts are to stay fit and healthy and push on from there.

“I feel 100% fit. My injuries are in the past and I feel like a new player. I’ve been working hard in the off-season – there’s been no rest for me! I’ve had long enough off over the past year.

“You have to train well to play well and be in a position to give Nick a headache. Hopefully, going forward, I can push for minutes and play as much as I can over the season.”

Campbell came through the ranks with St Francis in the Dublin Women’s League, lifting the FAI Cup at the age of 16 and representing the club twice in the Champions League.

She moved onto Raheny United for the inaugural Women’s National League season and won a league and cup double in her own season before taking a scholarship at Florida State University.
