Mark O Brien extends stay at Newport County

Newport County defender Mark O’Brien has signed a new two-year contract with the Welsh-based League Two outfit.

The 26-year-old Irish defender extends his stay at Rodney Parade after playing a pivotal role in the club’s recent push for promotion to League One, which ultimately ended in disappointment.

Once of the famed Cherry Orchard schoolboy set-up, O’Brien captained ‘County’ against Manchester City in the FA Cup fifth round while also leading his side out at Wembley in the League Two Play-Off final.

A team-mate of Padraig Amond - the Ballyfermot native told Newport County’s media team that he is delighted to extend his stay with the club; “I’m delighted to extend my stay here in Newport for another two years.

“It was a shame not to clinch promotion at Wembley in the Play-Off Final but I am already feeling confident for the upcoming season.

"I am grateful to the manager and the club who have once again put their faith in me by offering me this deal. Bring on the new season.

Newport County boss Michael Flynn added:  "I'm delighted that 'OB' has signed terms for another two years at the club.

“He is a player who proved his quality last season, captaining us for the majority of the campaign and he is a player I am very happy is staying with the Club.

"He is a key member of our club and he has proved that over the last two years."
