Declan Devine makes first signings as Scottish pair Cherrie and Gilchrist joins Derry

Derry City have announced the signing of Peter Cherrie, Ally Gilchrist, Ciaran Coll and Jamie McDonagh ahead of the 2019 Premier Division season.

Goalkeeper Cherrie signs from Premier Division and FAI Cup double winners Cork City.

The 35-year-old Scot began his career with spells at Airdrie United and Ayr United. He joined Dundalk in 2009 where he picked up a Premier Division and EA Sports Cup winner’s medal in 2014.

A spell with Cliftonville in the Northern Ireland Football League followed before the experienced shot stopper returned to the League of Ireland in 2015 with Bray Wanderers.

Former St Johnstone defender Gilchrist makes the move to Derry having spent the 2018 season with Shamrock Rovers.

The Edinburgh man spent over six years with St Johnstone which included loan spells with Elgin City and Peterhead.

Coll joins The Candystripes from fierce rivals Finn Harps. The defender departed Kildrum Tigers for Hearts in the SPL in 2007 but after a year at Tynecastle he returned to Ireland signing for Harps at the start of the 2009 season where he would go on to make over 270 appearances for the Donegal club.

The 27-year-old was an integral part of the Harps side that won promotion to the Premier Division in 2015 and in 2018.

Also re-signing with Derry is Northern Ireland under-21 international McDonagh. The 22 year old winger joined Derry from Sligo Rovers at the end of the 2017 League of Ireland season and made 38 appearances across all competitions as The Candystripes finished 8th.

The signings mark Declan Devine’s first additions to the club since taking over as manager in November after Kenny Shiels departed the club.
