WNL Cup Final Preview: Wexford Youths Women -v- Peamount United

Fri, Sep 14 2018

Wexford Youths host Peamount United at Ferrycarrig Park in a repeat of last season's unofficial play-off for the league title (kick-off 4pm).

The home side were victorious that day thanks to goals from Emma Hansberry and Rianna Jarrett and have carried that form into this season.

Wexford have lost just one game domestically all season - a narrow defeat to Shelbourne - but face a tough task as a motivated Peamount side return to Ferrycarrig Park.

It's the first of two consecutive meetings between the sides as their meeting next week could go a long way towards determining the course of the title race.

Wexford sit seven points clear of Peamount and three ahead of Shelbourne with five games each remaining.

In Jarrett, Wexford have the league's top scorer with 25 goals and will hope the Ireland international nets her most important strike of the season on Saturday evening.

Peamount United's five-year wait for domestic silverware could come to an end at Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday.

The Peas last lifted a trophy in 2013 when they beat the now-defunct Castlebar Celtic 6-3 to lift the WNL Cup in Mayo.

They narrowly missed out on the league title to Wexford last season and were this year's early-season pace-setters before Wexford began to pull clear over the summer.

They beat UCD Waves 3-0 in the semi-finals back in July, with goals from Niamh Farrelly, Amber Barrett and former UCD striker Áine O'Gorman doing the damage.

"It'll be nice to beat them and lift the cup and bring it back to Dublin," O'Gorman told extratime.ie.

"Shels and Wexford have to play again and we play Wexford the week after the cup final in Ferrycarrig.

"There's a few tough games coming up and hopefully they drop a few points and we can nip in there."

The sides have met twice in the league this season with Wexford holding the slight upper hand.

An early-season meeting in Wexford ended 2-2 as goals from Eleanor Ryan Doyle and Amber Barrett cancelled out efforts from Kylie Murphy and Becky Conroy.

The return game in Greenogue in June finished 2-1 to Wexford as Barrett's late goal wasn't enough to haul back Rianna Jarrett's brace either side of half time.
