40-year-old Roy Carroll signs one-year contract extension at Linfield

Linfield goalkeeper Roy Carroll has signed a new one-year contract extension at Windsor Park.

The 45-times-capped Northern Ireland international has agreed to stay on for a third season with the recently-deposed Irish League champions.

Former Manchester United, West Ham United and Olympiacos stopper was part of David Healy's side that regained the league title after a five-year drought.

“I’m delighted to advise our supporters that Roy Carroll has agreed to extend his contract at the club for a further year,” Healy told the club's official website.

“He’s a hugely popular personality and I know this news will go down well with our supporters who will be well aware of the impact he has made since joining the club.

“He has a huge presence on and off the pitch and his vast experience is proving of enormous benefit to our young keepers Gareth Deane and Alex Moore.

“Roy is an influential leader in and out of the changing room and I’m really pleased he has agreed to extend his playing career with us into another season.

“Roy looks after himself extremely well and I know he has the hunger and the drive to aim for major silverware in the season ahead.”

The former Northern Ireland number one turns 41 in September will be hoping to turn the club’s fortunes around after they failed to qualify for Europe for the first time in 15 years last season.
