Bluebell United's Dave Scully: 'We'd fancy our chances against Cork City'

After helping his side to a memorable 1-0 win over First Division side Cabinteely, Bluebell United’s David Scully said he is confident that the Leinster Senior League outfit can go all the way in this season’s Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup.

Despite Cabinteely’s status as a League of Ireland club, Scully said that Bluebell were backing themselves to progress through to the quarter-finals.

“We knew we probably had the beating of them,” Scully said after the match.

“We went long for the first 20 minutes but once they sat back we got the ball down and played”

With ex-Ireland international Keith Fahey controlling the game from midfield, alongside former League of Ireland midfielder Keith Quinn, Bluebell could have passed for a league club on the night, and showed their depth by bringing Scully off the bench.

“The gap between ourselves and the First Division and Premier Division is only there with the likes of Cork [City] or Shamrock Rovers, Dundalk and maybe Bohemians, but not with the rest of them,” the former Bohs player continued.

“I would still be playing League of Ireland myself but my wife had a baby and there’s too much travelling involved.”

Scully believes that with the experience in their squad, Bluebell should not fear anyone in this year’s competition, even the runaway Premier Division leaders.

“Even against Cork we’d fancy our chances.

“Look at the experience in our team, even look at myself coming off the bench tonight and some of the other lads we had coming off the bench. It’s unbelievable.

“[We can go] all the way. If we get a good draw in the quarter-finals then you never know. St. Francis did it years ago so we know it can be done.”

The club have a plethora of experience both on and off the field, and Scully was full of praise for Fahey’s influence on the team, for what he brings as a player and as a mentor for the rest of the squad.

“We have plenty of experience but with Keith it is unbelievable. He just talks you through the game.

“He tells you what position to be in and he’s an international so you are going to look up to him and anything he says you’re going to listen.

“We’ve had Jason Byrne on the sideline, which has been great, and then we’ve Fahey in the middle talking to the players as well, so we’re getting information from on the field and off the field.”
