Cork City WFC make new signings ahead of busy few months

Cork City W.F.C. travel to Buckley Park at 1.30 this Sunday 10th January 2016 to Bishopstown Stadium for the first game in the Continental Tyres League Cup. The Leesiders are also delighted to announce the signing of Danielle Burke and Lauren Homan.

The Leesiders have also been busy in the transfer market, adding two exciting young prospects with defender Danielle Burke and attacking midfielder Lauren Homan being added to the side who join from Passage AFC and Lakewood AFC respectively. Both have represented the Republic of Ireland Under 17 International Side. O’Regan continued "Danielle is as talented a footballer as you will see, she is comfortable anywhere along the defence and is good with both feet and demonstrates a maturity beyond her years. Lauren is a quick attack minded midfielder who can play in midfield or as a striker and is quick, with exceptionally quick feet and skills to match. Both will be huge additions to the club and will increase the number of current internationals in the squad to 5, with four under 17 and one under 19 international.”

City saw last weekend’s game against Peamount United cancelled due to the flooding in Cork and while the Niall O’Regan is frustrated to have a game cancelled, it definitely put football in perspective “This weekend’s game can't come soon enough, we were gutted to have the game at the weekend off but sadly Cork and most of the country has had to deal with this awful weather and I can't but mention and wish all those who struggled with the floods, well and know we are all thinking of them.”

The game is the first in the League Cup with remaining games upcoming in January against Wexford and UCD at home in a reverse of the Shield competition earlier this year.

“The League Cup is a great opportunity for us as a group to evaluate where we have come in the past six months as it is a replica of the previous cup group, except reversed. The girls have been working extremely hard over the past few weeks and we are grateful to the clubs in Cork such as Carrigaline United and Blarney United, who let us use their all-weather pitches while the indoor facilities in Nemo and Na Piarsiagh have helped us keep our training schedule.

O’Regan is also quick to praise the work his players are putting in, in terms of the fitness work they have put in throughout the Christmas period “Along with this the work the girls are putting in with Fehily’s Fitness in Ballincollig in F1T has been invaluable to the players. For us we look forward to the game and know Kilkenny will be a very difficult side as they themselves have added a number of talented players and our previous game there was a challenging 2-1 victory in the league and I have no doubt we will be in for a close tie again this coming weekend. “

While O’Regan hopes to have a fully fit squad coming into the game, there’s concerns over a few with small niggles and illness – one player is definitely out as Chelsea Noonan has suffered a cruciate ligament injury and will miss the remainder of the season. “There are a few players battling colds and will be fitness tested later in the week. For us we just pray that the rain stays away and that hopefully we will be able to get a run of games because all of us involved just can't wait to get back out onto the pitch.”
