Russell rues Limerick's lack of finishing

Limerick manager Martin Russell told Extratime.ie he felt that his side lacked an end product following their 2-0 defeat against Bohemians at Dalymount Park on Friday night.

“I think overall we played some good football to a point without creating the chances and scoring the goals that I felt the lead up probably warranted and the amount of possession particularly in the second half going towards Bohemians goals that we maybe should have got one.

“We had stuff floating across the area from two yards and couldn't put it in. It was one of those nights where we huffed and puffed but didn't have enough end product. There was a couple close together that I thought were over the line that weren't and then Bohs score a header from at least 12 to 15 yards out.”

Russell declared that his side are still trying to find the right balance between scoring at one end and keeping them out at the other.

“The first goal we were well in the game up to there and I think the lads tried to play decent football throughout but you have got to have an end product and also not be easy to score against, so we are still finding that balance and that is what we will try to do from now until the end of the season and particularly when we come back in the new season.”

The former UCD manager also admitted that results of late have been mixed.

“There have been some mixed results. I suppose like Bohs and all the teams in that middle cluster it has been a mixed season. We are trying to move things forward but hopefully the plan is with the off season that the real advancement will be next year and we can go up the table and also be competitive in the cup competitions as well.”

On a more positive note Russell was pleased that striker Rory Gaffney recently won the SWAI and Extratime.ie Player of the month award.

“Yeah that's a good sign. I think its 22 years since a Limerick player got that accolade. That is progress but we will look to make even bigger ones next year if we can.”
