Republic of Ireland Under-21 manager Don Givens has named his squad for next month’s friendly match against Germany, with FC Utrecht defender Barry Maguire included for the first time.

Maguire (19), who was born in Holland but qualifies for Ireland through his Dublin-born father, has broken into the first team at the Dutch side and is regarded as one of the Eredivisie’s top young players.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21s will take on Germany at Turner’s Cross on February 10th. The last time the two sides met, in August 2007, ended in a 2-2 draw, with Stephen Gleeson getting two goals for Ireland on his debut.

Disappointingly, no players currently plying their trade in the League of Ireland were announced in the squad.

Announcing the squad, Republic of Ireland Under-21 manager Don Givens said: “This will be a very good test for our players. Countries like Germany can call on a big pool of players and are always very strong. They are preparing for this summer’s UEFA Under-21 European Championships, so their players will be looking to impress.

“However, we also have a very strong squad. A lot of the squad have played for us before and have shown their potential. I have not included any League of Ireland players in the squad simply because they are only returning to pre-season training, so that will give me the opportunity to have a look at some new players.”

Tickets for the match are available from all Ticketmaster outlets or by telephoning 0818 719 300. Tickets are priced €15 for adults and €5 for children under the age of 16.
