About Mark Farren

Mark began his career in the youth set-up at Tranmere Rovers' in 1998 but his progress there was impeded by injury, as was a year at Huddersfield Town in 1999/00. In the summer of 2000 Mark returned home to sign for Finn Harps without having made a senior appearance at either of his English clubs.

A lack of opportunities at Finn Park saw him move on to Monaghan United in 2001, having made just a single league appearance for Harps. Over two years at Gortakeegan Mark made 7 league appearances and scored once.

In 2003 Mark moved to Derry City and under manager Gavin Dykes, he became a first team regular in 2004. In 2005 he won the PFAI Player of the Year, scoring 18 league goals in 32 appearances for the Candystripes. Mark won an FAI Cup winners medal in 2006, scoring in the club's 4-3 win over St Patrick's Athletic in the final and was also part of four League Cup winning teams between 2005 and 2008.

Mark also played a key role in the Derry City's 2010 First Division title win, scoring 18 league goals in 27 appearances, but in the latter stages of that campaign he was diagnosed with a brain tumour and he stepped back from football at the end of that season.

Happily Mark made a full recovery and re-joined the Derry City squad in August 2011. He made his come-back in a 1-1 draw against Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds on 3 September 2011 and scored his only goal of the season six weeks later in a 4-0 win over Galway United.
