Ger started his career at Geraldines in Limerick and won a contract at Glasgow Celtic in December 2006. He was at Parkhead for six months before returning to Geraldines in the summer of 2007.
In 2008 Ger was part of the UCD side that won the inaugural A Championship and he made his league debut for the Students on the opening day of the 2009 season when UCD beat Limerick FC 2-1 at Belfield. He went on to make a total of 26 league appearances over the next two seasons, sharing the goalkeeper's shirt with Billy Brennan.
When Brennan left after the 2010 season, Ger became top dog at Belfield and made a further 29 league appearances in 2011.
