Dean Delany - Shelbourne
About Dean Delany
Dean Delaney joined Everton as a schoolboy in 1997, and went on to be a key part of their 1998 FA Youth Cup Winning team. After leaving Everton he joined Port Vale in 2000, spending four years there before signing for Shelbourne in May 2004.
Delany made his Shels league debut in June 2005 against Waterford United and helped the club to the 2006 League title. But this was a time of financial chaos at the club and Dean left Tolka Park at the end of the 2006 season, signing for Waterford United on 15 March 2007.
After one season at Waterford, in which Dean made 30 league appearances for the club, Dean re-signed for Shelbourne in November 2007. Dean was ever present for Shels in 2008, playing in all 36 league games as the Reds were denied promotion by an injury time goal in their final game against Limerick 37.
In 2009 Dean missed just one league game as Shels were again denied promotion, this time in a play-off against Sporting Final, and 2010 proved frustrating once again as Shels just missed out on the promotion play-offs, with Dean playing in all 33 of Shelbourne’s First Division games that year.
Delany made 28 league appearances for Shelbourne in 2011 as the club finished second in the First Division, finally earning promotion to the Premier League. He also played in his first FAI Cup final as the Reds lost out to Sligo Rovers in a penalty shootout at the Aviva Stadium.
Delany represented Ireland when they won the 1998 under-18 European Championship and he played for his country in the same competition in 1999, when the boys in green finished third. He also played for Ireland at the World under 20 Championships in Nigeria and he has been capped 20 times for Ireland at U21 level.
