Colin started his career as a schoolboy at Salthill Devon before taking up a two year contract at Coventry City in 1995. He spent two years at the 'Sky Blues' without making a first team appearance and in 1997 he came home to sign for St Patrick's Athletic where he won two league titles in his three years at the club.

At the end of the 1999/00 season Hawkins returned to England, signing for Doncaster Rovers where he made 38 league appearances over an eighteen month period. In November 2000 Hawkins signed for Bohemians, winning his third league champions medal in 2003.

Colin joined Shelbourne at the start of the 2004 season and won his fourth league title in 2006. At the end of that season he returned to Coventry City and enjoyed eighteen successful months before signing for Micky Adams at Brighton & Hove Albion in May 2008.

He made just 18 appearances for Brighton over the two year period of his contract and was released in the summer of 2010.

At this point he came home to sign for Liam Buckley at Sporting Fingal in July 2010. He made nine league appearances for the 'Ravens' in the latter half of the 2010 season but any intention to remain at the club came to an abrupt end when they folded on 10 February 2011.

Days later Colin signed for Ian Foster at Dundalk. Despite injuries he made 23 league appearances for the Lilywhites and scored four league goals. At the end of that season Colin made the move into coaching, signing for Shamrock Rovers in a player/coach capacity for new Rovers boss, Stephen Kenny. He scored on his Rovers debut, in a Setanta Cup win over Cliftonville at Tallaght Stadium on 5 March 2012 and he went on to make 12 league appearances that year. But in 2013 he was not named as a player, limiting himself to his coaching role under new boss Trevor Croly.
