John’s Biography

John was a right-back who started out with hometown club Drogheda United in the mid-90s, and earned promotion in his second season at United Park. A short spell at Monaghan United ended after just 13 appearances as Flanagan transferred to Home Farm, before he soon moved on to Dundalk in 1999.

In one of his first appearances for Dundalk, John - playing in a midfield role - scored a hat-trick against Saint Francis. The Lilywhites went on to narrowly miss out on promotion that year but John was to help Dundalk achieve that very aim just twelve months later, and though they would be relegated the following season, he eased that blow by claiming an FAI Cup just one week after their demotion.

John remained on at Oriel Park for another First Division campaign, however, a falling out with Trevor Anderson saw him return to Drogheda, where he spent two seasons in the Premier Division. The Boynesiders’ decision to go full-time forced Flanagan to depart, as he signed for Athlone Town at the beginning of the 2005 season.

A disappointing time in Athlone was to end after just six months and John became a Lilywhite once more in August of that year as Jim Gannon re-signed the fans favourite. John was part of the squad which won ‘promotion’ in November 2006 and was still at the club when they again won the First Division title in 2008, but that would prove to be his last hurrah and he retired from league football at the end of the '08 season.
