Chris’s Biography
Chris is a goalkeeper, and former Scottish schoolboys international, who began his career at Edinburgh Celtic before moving on to the city’s biggest club, Heart of Midlothian.
Having been spotted by Middlesbrough scouts, Chris transferred to the English Premiership side in 1999, where he spent three years. In 2000 he arrived for a short loan spell at Shelbourne, but was recalled to Middlesbrough after an injury crisis left them without a fit ‘keeper. Shortly after his return Chris moved to Scunthorpe United on loan.
That deal became permanent in 2001. However, after just six first-team appearances, Bennion returned to Shels in May 2002. He made his debut for Pat Fenlon’s men in an 8-0 FAI Cup win over junior side Rockmount, however, he again struggled to gain first-team football, failing to dislodge Steve Williams from the number one spot.
After eighteen months at Tolka Park, Bennion’s services were sought by both Longford Town and Dundalk, with the Scot choosing the latter as he arrived at Oriel Park in January 2004. Chris spent six seasons at Dundalk, winning the First Division title in 2008 and making over 170 appearances, before signing for Athlone Town on 7 December 2009.
Chris made 18 league appearances for Athlone in 2010 before making a summer move to St Patrick's Athletic where he signed for Pete Mahon. He made just one league appearance for the Inchicore side in 2010, acting mainly as goalkeeping cover for Gary Rogers. 2011 provided a similar story as Chris was involved in all 36 of St Pat's league games but played in just three of them.
In January 2012 he signed for Roddy Collins at Monaghan United, making his debut on a 0-0 draw against his former club Dundalk on the opening night of the 2012 season. But on 18 June monaghan withdrew from the league and on 5 July he signed for Shelbourne for the remainder of the 2012 season.
Chris played twenty four games for Shelbourne, as they finished eighth in the league. He kept four clean sheets during his time at Tolka Park. Chris left Shelbourne to join Longford Town for the 2013 First Division season. He was first choice keeper at the club, starting all twenty eight games during the season. He only conceded thirty four goals and kept five clean sheets, as Longford narrowly missed out on promotion, losing a play-off against Bray Wanderers.
Chris re-signed for Longford for the 2014 season. He started the first nine games but then lost his place to Paul Hunt, as Longford Town won the First Division title. He also played in the last game of the season for his tenth appearance. He retired from football in November 2014.
In 2015 Chris took up the position of Goalkeeping Coach with Athlone Town.
