Paul’s Biography

Paul Smyth is a left-sided midfielder who can also play in attack. He began his League of Ireland career with his hometown club, Monaghan United, where he won promotion to the Premier Division in 2001. He was unable to take part in United’s short spell back in the top flight, however, as he instead took up a scholarship in Memphis.

After returning home, Smyth joined Finn Harps in 2003 for a short stint, before he went on to spend eighteen months at Irish League side, Ballinamallard United, before being signed back for Monaghan by Mick Cooke for the beginning of the 2006 season. He was an ever-present during that campaign, as he scored three goals in 34 league outings for the club. His final goal that season came against Dundalk as he ended the Lilywhites’ incredible 20-match unbeaten run, in a 1-0 defeat which ultimately cost them the league title.

Ironically, just four months later, Smyth transferred to Oriel Park in a late loan deal before the start of the 2007 season. He made his competitive debut for the club in a 3-2 win over Finn Harps at Oriel Park on 8 March 2008, before finding his first ever club goal the following May as he netted in a 3-0 home win over Shelbourne.
