David’s Biography

David McGill’s footballing career began in the United States after he enrolled at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. He played with the Charlotte 49’ers, where he appeared in 38 games over two seasons and scored two goals.

McGill then enrolled at the University of California, Santa Barbara, for his junior year in 2002 where he played in 39 games over two seasons and scored three goals.

The midfielder returned to Ireland and joined Dublin City at the start of the 2004 season, but was released by manager Roddy Collins during the summer. At the start of 2005 he returned to the club and helped the Vikings to promotion to the Premier Division after scoring the club’s winning goal in the first leg of a two-legged promotion play-off victory over Shamrock Rovers. McGill remained at Dublin City until the Vikings went out of business in July 2006.

David was then quickly signed by Shamrock Rovers and made his debut for the club on 28 July 2006 in a 3-0 win over Athlone Town at St. Mels Park. He went on to make 13 more appearances for the Hoops that season and collect his second consecutive First Division title medal as Rovers pipped Dundalk to top the division.

David remained at Rovers for most of 2007 and had made a total of 29 appearances, scoring twice, by the time he left in August of that year. After a brief spell at Mount Merrion YMCA, he signed for Shelbourne on 29 November 2007 and made his Shels debut in a scoreless draw against Dundalk at Tolka Park on the opening day of the 2008 season. He scored his first goal for the club in a 1-0 victory against Wexford Youths at Tolka Park on 17 October 2008.

The Dublin born midfielder made 28 appearances and scored six goals for Shels in the First Division in 2010. David also made 18 appearances and was booked four times during Shelbourne’s promotion winning campaign in 2011.

In January 2012 David considered a contract offer from Longford Town but decided against signing for the club. In the summer of 2012 he joined LSL side Newbridge Town.
